Prayer helps even when you don’t believe in God – so many are afraid

They say prayer helps. All traditions teach that. So many are afraid. Just because you don’t believe in a god doesn’t mean you cannot pray. Words have power. A great rishi from a realm where there are no gods taught that.

.

There is pain over the election and pain from many losses, physical and emotional. Unimaginable events are occurring in the world, so many things so rapidly changing.

.

Why are people so afraid? The answer is that they have made themselves helpless and dependent on others. We are so lazy, we do not want to do anything ourselves. We want a Personal God, a Savior or a Prophet to do everything for us.

Vivekananda

.

A great spiritual teacher, beloved at the Hollywood Vedanta Society until his death in 1976, advised this:

.

“Remember, if you have problems, if your mind is upset – it’s neither this nor that; it is that your mind is not in the Lord.”

.

God has many names: the Lord, the Absolute, the Infinite, the Great Spirit, some feel it as intense consciousness, existence, bliss without having words to name it.

.

“Try different ways of keeping your mind in the Lord. When you go to bed, think you are prostrating at the feet of  Mother. Or think of Mother in your heart. Or think of the Lord seated on the Lotus. New ways will come to you. Are you struggling? That is the point.”

.

A Light to the West, The Life and Teachings of Swami Prabhavananda, Page 169.

.

I especially like his teachings in the last few chapters. Vedanta embraces all paths and teaches four methods to realize the One. There is mainly one difference from Buddhism: Vedanta teaches you have a soul; Buddhism does not. That applies to the path of Jnana yoga; the three other paths worship God through devotion, meditation or work. Saint Lawrence felt closer to God in the kitchen than in the Chapel. The Great Spirit is omnipresent.

.

Even those in the realm of the absolute teach prayer. They exist in the realm where there is no god, only Absolute consciousness, existence, bliss. You are not different than that. You cannot divide infinite or separate from consciousness or existence. You are That. It is omnipresent. Right here, right now, everywhere.

There is power in the word. The sacred word. Pray from the heart, located on the right side of chest.

.

The Sioux Indians, enjoined by other tribes, Veterans, and volunteers are opposing the militarized police, to stop the Dakota pipeline. They are praying on our behalf to ask help from the Infinite, to teach us all on the planet that everything is sacred, the sacred Earth, sacred Fire, sacred Water.

.

I am told the pipeline will go under the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers. Imagine what could happen.

.

They are praying to raise our understanding that everything is sacred. That God is all that is.

.

They were told today their supplies will be cut off. Neil Young asked the president for help.

.

May we feel the Holy Presence in the sacred Earth, sacred Fire, Sacred Water and keep it pure.

.

Here are teachings that  never fail:

.

First, believe in the world—that there is meaning behind everything.

Don’t look back—forward, infinite energy, infinite enthusiasm, infinite daring, and infinite patience—then alone can great deeds be accomplished.

This is the first lesson to learn: be determined not to curse anything outside, not to lay the blame upon anyone outside, but stand up, lay the blame on yourself. You will find that is always true. Get hold of yourself.

Tell the truth boldly, whether it hurts or not. Never pander to weakness. If truth is too much for intelligent people and sweeps them away, let them go; the sooner the better.

This life is a hard fact; work your way through it boldly, though it may be adamantine; no matter, the soul is stronger.

This I have seen in life—those who are overcautious about themselves fall into dangers at every step; those who are afraid of losing honor and respect, get only disgrace; and those who are always afraid of loss, always lose.

“Face the brutes.” That is a lesson for all life—face the terrible, face it boldly. Like the monkeys, the hardships of life fall back when we cease to flee before them.

Those who work at a thing heart and soul not only achieve success in it but through their absorption in that they also realize the supreme truth—Brahman. Those who work at a thing with their whole heart receive help from God.

I, for one, thoroughly believe that no power in the universe can withhold from anyone anything they really deserve.

The whole secret of existence is to have no fear. Never fear what will become of you, depend on no one. Only the moment you reject all help are you free.

Fear is death, fear is sin, fear is hell, fear is unrighteousness, fear is wrong life. All the negative thoughts and ideas that are in the world have proceeded from this evil spirit of fear.

Why are people so afraid? The answer is that they have made themselves helpless and dependent on others. We are so lazy, we do not want to do anything ourselves. We want a Personal God, a Savior or a Prophet to do everything for us.

Words of Vivekanada

I am falling behind on so many important new publications but no time to write on these pages. It’s time to pray. I hope it’s not too late.

..

Pray for all who are suffering. The Earth is alive too.
